Ceramic capacitors increase reliability
New from Morgan Electro Ceramics, a leading manufacturer of electro ceramic material solutions, is a high voltage discharge ceramic capacitor with a high break-down strength up to 10 kVmm-1 and an inherently low dielectric loss. This combination of properties allows increased energy storage for high performance and improved reliability of circuits with high peak current and repetition rates, for example in power-pulse applications such as gas lasers used in cosmetic markets.
The ceramic discharge capacitor uses a strontium-titanate-based dielectric material, which exhibits a negligible piezoelectric and electrostrictive effect. As such, it is suitable for high-energy pulse-power systems, with custom operating voltages up to 60,000V. The combination of high break-down strength and high permittivity of the material allows for improved energy density storage of up to 6JKg-1.
The high energy density of the capacitor is maximised over the rated working voltage (20 – 60 kV) and temperature range (–10 to +85ºC) by the low capacitance/voltage and capacitance/temperature coefficients.
“Increased demand for these types of capacitors has come from the growing pulse-power and laser-eye surgery markets,” says Paul Turnbull, Product Manager, Morgan Electro Ceramics. “Our materials engineers and applications specialists have been developing our range of ceramic capacitors to meet this need and a high performance capacitor solution is now available for increased reliability.”
The company’s expertise and world-class manufacturing facilities allow for the design and build of custom shapes for bespoke applications. The specialist teams work with many global laser manufacturers providing reliable custom solutions for high pulse-power engineering needs.
